Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Empathy Test?
A free 10-question quiz that measures how empathetic you are. You rate how much you agree with ten short statements about how you respond to other people's feelings, and get an instant result — from Guarded to Deeply Empathetic — with what it means for your relationships and a growth edge. It's a self-discovery snapshot, not a clinical diagnosis.
What does the empathy score actually measure?
It measures dispositional empathy — your tendency to notice, feel, and respond to what others are going through. The result blends two sides: Emotional Resonance (how much you feel others' emotions) and Caring Action (how readily you show up and do things for people). A higher score means you tune in to others more strongly and consistently.
What is this test based on?
The questions come from the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) — specifically the Compassion aspect of Agreeableness (DeYoung, Quilty & Peterson, 2007). These are public-domain items widely used in personality research. Five items are worded toward empathy and five away from it, then reverse-scored, which balances out the tendency to simply agree with everything.
Is low empathy a bad thing?
No. Empathy sits on a spectrum, and a lower score isn't coldness or a defect — it can reflect a more analytical wiring, healthy self-protection, or temporary burnout. Lower-empathy people often stay steady and clear-headed when others get swept up. Empathy is also trainable: small, deliberate check-ins genuinely build the muscle over time.
Can you have too much empathy?
Yes, in a sense. Very high empathy is a gift for connection, but absorbing everyone's feelings without boundaries can lead to emotional exhaustion and compassion fatigue. The healthiest pattern is strong empathy paired with limits — caring deeply for others while still protecting your own energy. Boundaries don't cancel your empathy; they keep it sustainable.
How long does the test take?
About 2 minutes for 10 questions. You get an instant result showing where you land on the empathy spectrum, how your emotional resonance and caring action break down, and a growth edge — no signup, no email, no paywall.
