Nine Star Ki (九星気学, kyusei kigaku) is a Japanese birth-date astrology system that assigns you one of nine stars, each carrying one of five elements — Water, Earth, Wood, Metal or Fire. It grew out of the ancient Chinese Lo Shu magic square and Bagua tradition and was codified into its modern Japanese form by Sonoda Shinjiro in 1924. Each star comes with a character description, a relationship pattern, career tendencies and a traditional lucky direction.
From your birth year, with one important correction. First your birth date is mapped to its astrological year: the Nine Star Ki year begins at setsubun, on or about 4 February, so a birthday in January or early February belongs to the previous year. The digital root of that adjusted year is then taken and subtracted from 11, wrapping around if the result exceeds 9. No — they are two different systems that both happen to use your birth year. The Chinese zodiac runs on a 12-year cycle of animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger and so on). Nine Star Ki runs on a 9-year cycle of numbered stars derived from the Lo Shu magic square. They also use different year boundaries: the Chinese zodiac follows the lunar new year, which moves between late January and late February, while Nine Star Ki uses the fixed solar setsubun boundary of about 4 February. You have both a zodiac animal and a Nine Star Ki star, and they are unrelated to one another.
Each of the nine stars sits in a fixed position on the Lo Shu square, and that position corresponds to a compass direction — North for One White Water, Southwest for Two Black Earth, and so on. Traditionally that direction is treated as the one where your energy is most at home, and it is used when choosing where to travel, sit or place a desk. Five Yellow Earth is the exception: it sits at the centre and has no direction of its own. Note that we show your star’s fixed home direction, not the annually shifting directions that some practitioners calculate.

Nine Star Ki (九星気学, kyusei kigaku) is a Japanese system of birth-date astrology that sorts everyone into one of nine "stars", numbered 1 to 9. The one rule that surprises almost everyone is the year boundary. Nine Star Ki does not use 1 January. Its year begins at setsubun (節分), the seasonal turning point that falls on or about 4 February — so if you were born in January or in the first days of February, your Main Star is calculated from the PREVIOUS calendar year, not the year printed on your birth certificate. This single correction is why so many free calculators disagree with each other, and it is the most common reason someone is told the wrong star.
