What's Your Parenting Style

Parenting style describes the emotional climate a parent creates, the blend of warmth and structure that shapes how you set limits, respond to feelings, and make decisions with your child. Developmental psychologists Diana Baumrind and, later, Eleanor Maccoby and John Martin mapped this onto two dimensions, how responsive (warm, attuned) you are and how demanding (structured, expecting) you are. Cross those two axes and you get four well-known styles: Authoritative (warm and firm), Authoritarian (firm but low on warmth), Permissive (warm but low on structure), and Uninvolved (low on both, often because life has a parent stretched thin).
