Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a real psychopath test?
It is a real self-reflection test, but not a diagnostic one. No online quiz can diagnose psychopathy: that takes a structured assessment by a trained professional. This test asks 20 questions about four traits that researchers associate with psychopathic personality, callousness, manipulativeness, impulsivity and boldness, and shows how strongly each appears in the way you describe yourself. The items are JC-original and the test is not validated against any clinical instrument.
What is the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath?
Neither word is a diagnosis in the manuals clinicians use; the nearest formal diagnosis is antisocial personality disorder, which does not map neatly onto either. In everyday speech, psychopath usually means the cool, calculating end (little fear, little empathy, charm used on purpose) and sociopath the hot, reactive end (short fuse, impulsive, rule-breaking). There is no agreed clinical split, so this test shows the traits separately instead of pretending to draw one.
Can I use this to find out if someone else is a psychopath or sociopath?
No. It is a self-report, so it only reflects how the person taking it describes themselves, and it is not built to assess anyone else. If someone's behavior is hurting or frightening you, focus on the behavior and on your own safety rather than on a label, and contact local support services, or emergency services if you are in immediate danger.
Does a high score mean I am dangerous or a bad person?
No. These are traits everyone has to some degree, and a score only describes how you answered 20 statements. Boldness, for example, can simply mean staying calm under pressure. What matters is how the traits show up in your life and whether they harm you or anyone else. If they do, a licensed mental-health professional is the right person to talk to.
How is this different from the Dark Triad test?
The Dark Triad test on JobCannon covers three traits, narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy, in a single profile. This page goes deeper on one family: four traits associated with psychopathic personality, plus a plain-language explanation of psychopath versus sociopath. For the three-trait view take the Dark Triad test; to look at psychopathic traits on their own, start here.
Are these traits fixed or can they change?
Personality traits are relatively stable over time, but they are not fixed. Life events, deliberate effort and professional support can shift where you sit on any of these four dimensions. A self-report taken today reflects how you describe yourself right now, and the same person can score differently a year later. If any result concerns you, that is worth exploring with a qualified professional.
How should I answer the 20 statements?
Twenty statements about how you think, feel and act. Rate how much each one sounds like you on an ordinary day, using the five-point scale from Strongly disagree to Strongly agree. Answer as you are, not as you would like to be seen. There are no right or wrong answers, and this is a self-reflection tool, not a diagnosis.
