Big Five (OCEAN)

Warmth (Extraversion facet)

A facet of Big Five Extraversion measuring affectionate, friendly, and openly enthusiastic behavior toward others. High scorers form connections easily and are visibly affectionate.

Warmth is one of six facets within Costa & McCrae's NEO-PI-R Extraversion domain. It captures how openly affectionate a person is — not just whether they enjoy company (gregariousness) but whether they readily show liking and interest in others.

High Warmth people greet strangers warmly, hug freely, and make people feel at ease quickly. Low Warmth (formal, reserved) is not coldness — it is restraint. Many introverts with high Agreeableness still score moderate-to-high on Warmth because affection and energy-from-people are separate.

Career connection: high Warmth is a strong predictor of success in client-facing roles, healthcare, hospitality, and teaching. Combined with low overall Extraversion, it creates the "warm one-on-one" profile (counsellors, GPs).
