Ideas (Openness facet)
A facet of Big Five Openness measuring intellectual curiosity, love of abstract reasoning, and enjoyment of theoretical discussion. The most predictive Openness facet for academic and analytical careers.
Ideas is the intellectual-curiosity facet of Openness. High scorers enjoy abstract reasoning, theoretical puzzles, philosophy, mathematics, and discussions that go beyond practical application. They are drawn to "why" and "what if" questions.
This facet is the strongest Openness predictor of academic achievement (r=0.20-0.30 with university GPA when controlling for IQ) and of long careers in research, science, and theoretical disciplines.
It is distinct from intelligence: a high-IQ person may have low Ideas (prefers applied work), and a more moderately-intelligent person may have very high Ideas (loves theory regardless of difficulty). The combination of high Ideas + high IQ is the academic-researcher profile.
