Realistic Type (RIASEC)
The RIASEC code for people oriented toward practical, hands-on, mechanical work with tools, machines, and physical objects. Realistic types prefer action over ideas.
Realistic (R) is the first letter in Holland's RIASEC model (Holland, 1997). People high in Realistic orientation enjoy building, fixing, and working with tangible materials. They prefer straightforward problems with clear solutions.
Realistic careers include: electrician, mechanic, carpenter, engineer, surgeon, farmer, contractor, pilot, and trade workers. Work environment characteristics: hands-on, results-oriented, hierarchical, competitive on skill.
Realistic types value concrete outcomes and practical effectiveness over theoretical elegance. In teams, they're problem-solvers who say "let's just build it." High Realistic + low Artistic/Social can create excellent specialists but difficulty in collaborative or client-facing roles. Career satisfaction comes from mastery of tangible skills and visible results.
