Sales Engineer
Be the technical expert on the sales team: understand what the customer needs, prove that the product can do it, and help the deal close.
About the profession
A Sales Engineer sells products that are too technical to be sold on a sales pitch alone: software platforms, cloud services, industrial machinery, electronic systems, medical devices, chemicals and other equipment that a buyer has to understand before committing to it. O*NET describes the occupation as selling goods or services whose sale requires a technical background equivalent to an engineering degree. In practice, the Sales Engineer works side by side with an Account Executive. The Account Executive owns the relationship, the price and the contract; the Sales Engineer owns the technical side of the sale. That means learning the customer's systems and requirements, designing how the product would fit them, running demonstrations and trials, answering detailed technical and security questions, and writing the technical parts of proposals.
