The framework here is a curriculum standard, not a psychometric instrument. Items were written one-per-criterion against 5.1, 5.3, 5.4 and 5.6 of the Arizona standards for grades 6-8, so the test can be crosswalked to what a district is required to teach — it has not been through reliability or validity study, and no norms exist for it.
How Well Do You Adapt the Way You Communicate? Free 24-Question Test
Free communication adaptability test: 24 school and work situations scored on audience, purpose, culture, distance and the rules of email, texts and resumes.
What is the Communication Adaptability Test?
This communication adaptability test gives you 24 short situations — a group-project message to a classmate, an email to a teacher you have never met, a first message to a manager about a weekend shift — and asks which response fits the situation best. Your answers are scored on four separate skills: telling interpersonal skills apart from communication skills, changing a message for its audience and its purpose, noticing how culture, generation and physical distance change what a message means, and using the conventions each medium expects across email, a formal letter, a resume, a text and a public social post. Each situation has one response keyed as the best fit by consensus practice, and the scoring reads the pattern across all 24 items, because adapting is a habit rather than a single right answer.

This is not a personality test and not an English or grammar exam. It does not describe who you are, and it does not measure vocabulary, spelling or how well you write from a blank page — it measures whether you can tell which version of a message a particular reader needs. It is also not the same thing as the Communication Style test, which sorts how you behave during a disagreement into assertive, passive, aggressive or passive-aggressive; that test is about conflict, this one is about audience. It is a curriculum-aligned self-assessment written at a middle-school reading level, not a proctored exam, not a graded assignment, and not a credential to put on an application. A low score names a skill to practise, not something fixed about you.
You get an overall band, from one setting for every room through to adapts on purpose, plus four separate scores so you can see which part slips: spotting the difference between getting along with people and getting a message across, shifting register between a friend, a teacher and an employer, reading what culture, generation and distance do to the same sentence, or knowing that a text and a cover letter are not written the same way. Every item you answer differently from the keyed response is explained afterwards in terms of the skill behind it, so the result reads as habits to work on rather than one number. It takes about 5 minutes, there is no timer, and you can see your result without creating an account. Retaking it after a term of practice is where it becomes most useful.
