What is the Locus of Control?
Locus of control is a psychological concept that describes where you believe the causes of your life outcomes lie. People with an internal locus feel that their own choices, effort, and persistence shape what happens to them. People with an external locus feel that luck, fate, timing, and other people are mostly in the driver's seat. Most of us sit somewhere on the spectrum between the two.
Your locus of control influences motivation, resilience, and how you respond to setbacks. A more internal orientation tends to go with persistence and a sense of agency, while a more external orientation can bring realism about what's genuinely outside your control, but at the cost of motivation if it tips too far. Crucially, locus of control is one of the more learnable parts of how we see the world, not a fixed trait.
JobCannon's test uses 12 short statements, half phrased toward internal beliefs and half toward external ones, so simple agreement bias can't skew the result. You get a clear placement on the internal-external spectrum with a plain-language read of what it means and a practical suggestion for building a stronger sense of agency. It takes about three minutes and is completely free, no signup, no email.
