The basics

What is the Love Type Test?

The Love Type Test (ラブタイプ診断) is a Japanese-style romantic personality quiz that describes how you actually behave in a relationship, not how you wish you did. Eight everyday situations, such as who picks the date spot and what you want after a long day apart, are scored across four axes and combined into a 4-letter code. In Japan the same format is searched as ラブタイプ診断 and 恋愛タイプ診断, and it follows the shareable 16-type pattern of MBTI-style quizzes: short, specific and built to be compared with friends.

The four axes are Lead or Follow (who sets the direction), Cuddly or Accepting (closeness versus room to breathe), Realistic or Passionate (steady versus intense) and Optimistic or Earnest (hope versus keeping your word). Each combination lands on one of 16 named types with its own read, two strengths and one pitfall. LCRO is 太陽の甘えん坊, The Sunlit Darling, while FAPE is 深海のともしび, The Deep-Sea Light. You also get your two best-match types, so you can see which styles tend to balance yours.

This is an entertainment and self-reflection quiz in the tradition of Japanese 性格診断, not a clinical instrument and not a compatibility guarantee. It has not been validated against a psychological measure, so treat the code as a conversation starter about your habits. Expect it to shift with the person you are with and the season of life you are in, and retake it whenever those change.

  • It is an 8-question quiz that reads your romantic instincts across four axes and returns a 4-letter code plus one of 16 named types, for example LCRO, The Sunlit Darling. The questions describe everyday moments, like choosing a date or reuniting after a long day, so you answer with what you really do. The result shows your type, your lean on each axis, two strengths, one pitfall and two best-match types.

  • Lead or Follow is who naturally sets the direction when a relationship needs a decision. Cuddly or Accepting is closeness versus room to breathe: whether you show and feel love through nearness or through space. Realistic or Passionate is steady, calm love versus intense, high-spark love. Optimistic or Earnest is whether hope or keeping your word carries you through a rough patch. Your answers on each axis combine into the code.

  • There are 16, one for every combination of the four axes, from LCRO to FAPE. Each has its own name, a short read, two strengths and one pitfall. The two best-match types are the ones whose style tends to balance yours, for example a partner who leads gently when you lean toward following. They are a starting point for reflection, not a promise that any pairing will or will not work.

  • The Love Type Test describes your own habits as a partner: how you lead, seek closeness, feel love and stay committed. Sternberg's triangular theory of love is a research framework that describes a relationship by its intimacy, passion and commitment. If you want to look at one specific relationship, the Sternberg test fits better. If you want a shareable read on your personal style, this quiz does that job.

  • No. It is an entertainment and self-reflection quiz in the Japanese 性格診断 tradition, not a clinical or peer-reviewed relationship assessment, and it makes no claim to predict how a relationship will turn out. Its four axes are a simple way to organize how people talk about romantic style, so use the result as a prompt for thinking and for conversation, not as a diagnosis or a verdict on anyone.

  • Yes. Your instincts shift with experience, with the person you are with and with the stage of life you are in, so retaking the test later can give a different code. Many people find their lean on one or two axes stays fairly steady while the others move. Because each axis is scored on a spectrum, a result near the middle of an axis is the one most likely to flip next time.
