The basics

What is the Competency Test?

A competency test rates how you tend to behave at work, not what you know. JobCannon's Competency Test is a free self-rating: you answer 30 statements about communication, problem solving, leadership, planning, adaptability and teamwork, and you get a level for each of the six areas, Strong, Developing or Early stage. There are no right answers and no timer.

Each of the six areas is covered by five statements about everyday situations, such as handing work over, changing a plan, or disagreeing with a colleague. For each one you choose how often it is true for you, from almost never to almost always. A few statements are worded in the opposite direction on purpose, so ticking "almost always" all the way down does not produce a perfect profile. Answers are scored per competency, which means a strong score in planning never hides a weak one in communication.

It helps to be clear about what a self-rating is. It shows how you describe your own working habits today. It does not measure how skilled you are, it is not an ability test or an IQ test, and it does not predict whether you will succeed in a job. The levels come from cut points we chose ourselves, not from a norm group, so nothing here compares you with other people. Use the result as a mirror and a starting point for a conversation with yourself, a manager or a coach. If you want an inventory of what you can do rather than how you work, the Skills Audit covers that side, and the two work well together.

  • A competency test asks you to rate how often you act in the ways a job tends to ask for, such as communicating clearly, solving problems, planning your work or adapting when plans change. Unlike an ability test it has no right answers. JobCannon's Competency Test is a free self-rating of six work competencies, scored per competency, and it takes only a few minutes.

  • A skills test checks what you can do, and an aptitude test checks how well you reason, both against right answers. A competency test checks how you behave at work, as reported by you. That is why JobCannon offers the Competency Test next to the Skills Audit: one rates your habits, the other inventories your skills, and neither one replaces the other.

  • It is an honest mirror, not a measurement instrument. It is an in-house self-rating, not a validated instrument, so there are no norms and no claim that a level predicts performance. People often rate themselves a little higher or lower than a colleague would, so treat the result as a starting point and check it against real examples from your own work.

  • No, and JobCannon does not claim it can. A self-rating shows how you describe your habits, and anyone can raise their answers on purpose. Employers who use competency questions well pair them with structured interviews and work samples. For you, the useful question is less what you scored and more where you can point to evidence, and where you cannot.

  • They are our own three bands, set by cut points we chose, not by comparison with other people. Strong means you reported the behavior often, Developing means you reported it sometimes, and Early stage means rarely. If every area comes out low, your headline result is Still building, which describes a starting point rather than a verdict on you.

  • Retake it after four to eight weeks of deliberately practicing one competency, or after a change of role. Your answers can move a little with your mood and with how your week went, so look at the pattern across several areas and compare it with what you actually did, rather than chasing a single percentage point.
