What is the Personal Finance Literacy Test?
This is a personal finance knowledge test: 24 questions with one right answer each, about money decisions that come up before anyone hands you a salary. Splitting an allowance so it lasts the month. Working out how many weeks of a $30-a-week side job it takes to buy a $180 bike. Reading a first paycheck and understanding why the number on it is smaller than the number you were promised. Nothing here assumes you already own a house, a car or a credit card.

The questions sit in three areas. Budgeting Basics covers where money goes — needs against wants, fixed against changing costs, and why writing spending down comes before deciding what to cut. Saving & Investing covers what money does when you leave it alone — interest, why interest on top of interest grows faster than you expect, why spreading money around is safer than putting it all in one place, and why an emergency cushion comes before anything risky. Job Benefits covers the part of a job that is not the salary: health insurance, life insurance, a retirement plan, employer-paid training, help with college costs, and what it means when one offer pays less on paper but is worth more in total.
It takes about five minutes, there is no signup, and the language is written for a middle-school reader — where a term like 401(k) is unavoidable, the question explains it in the question itself rather than assuming you know. Every question was authored for this test rather than adapted from an existing instrument, and the three areas were written directly against the Arizona Department of Education eCTE Career and College Readiness criteria 2.1 (financial management, budgeting and investing) and 2.5 (the financial benefits that come with a job or career).
