What Is My Spanish Level? Free 40-Question CEFR Test

Two of the four CEFR skills are deliberately not here. There is no listening section and no speaking section, so the result describes your reading and written Spanish and nothing else. Someone can read and write at a high level and still find a fast phone call hard, and the reverse happens just as often. Read the band as a statement about text, and treat spoken fluency as an open question this test has not answered.

The Spanish itself is neutral working Spanish, with Peninsular usage as the base. Words that read differently — or coarsely — on the other side of the Atlantic are kept off the paper, and nothing you are scored on turns on a regionalism. Where a question addresses someone at work it uses usted and ustedes; where it is an everyday exchange it uses tú. Accents are part of what is being measured, because in Spanish they carry meaning: esta and está, el and él, si and sí are different words.

The test is a screening instrument mapped to the published CEFR can-do descriptors, not an accredited certification. It cannot be presented as one, and it is not a substitute for DELE or SIELE — those are sat under exam conditions, cover all four skills, and carry recognition with universities and immigration authorities that this test does not have. What it does give you, in fifteen minutes and without an appointment, is an honest working estimate of the level your written Spanish is operating at, and a breakdown showing which of the four areas is holding it there.
