What is the Complex Trauma & Relationship Patterns Check-In?
The Complex Trauma & Relationship Patterns Check-In looks at patterns described in the ICD-11 diagnostic criteria for Complex PTSD (6C58): the same three core clusters as PTSD, re-experiencing, avoidance, and a persistent sense of current threat, plus three additional domains that only apply after trauma that was prolonged or repeated, not a single event: affect dysregulation, negative self-concept, and disturbed relationships. Together, clinicians call these three additional domains 'disturbances in self-organization,' or DSO.

Complex PTSD is understood as arising specifically from trauma that happened over a long time or over and over, childhood abuse or neglect, domestic violence, captivity, trafficking, ongoing war exposure, often at the hands of someone who was supposed to protect you. That's the key difference from PTSD, which can follow a single distressing event. This check-in exists because a single-event trauma screener doesn't capture the DSO domains, and a person living with complex trauma deserves language that names the fuller pattern.
This is a self-reflection tool, not a clinical diagnosis. If the results resonate or you are struggling, talk to a licensed professional experienced in complex trauma. Phase-based trauma treatment, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) are leading evidence-based approaches, and these patterns are genuinely treatable.
