The basics

What is the Number Series Test?

A number series test shows a row of numbers that follow a hidden rule and asks which number comes next. JobCannon's free number series test has 24 such puzzles with one correct answer each, covering steady steps, growing gaps, two interleaved series and chained rules. You get an instant score and a five-tier result, with no signup.

The 24 questions come in four groups of six. Steady Steps repeat one move, such as add 7, triple or halve. In Growing Steps the gaps themselves change, or the terms are squares and cubes. Two Series weaves two sequences into one row. Chained Rules builds each term from the ones before it. Each right answer is worth 3 points, your percent correct sets one of five tiers from Developing to Exceptional, and each group gets its own sub-score.

This is not the same as JobCannon's numerical reasoning test, which mixes arithmetic, percentages, ratios and data tables with a few sequences. This one is only the "continue the series" puzzle, a narrower and faster warm-up. The questions are original, written for JobCannon, and do not copy any employer's test. It is a short practice set, not a published or licensed cognitive test: there are no published norms and no reliability or validity study, so the result is a practice signal, not an IQ or a percentile.

  • Yes. The 24-question number series test is free to take, and your score, sub-score breakdown and tier appear on screen with no signup. There is no Premium upgrade for this test, so the result you see is the whole result.

  • It has 24 questions in four groups of six: Steady Steps, Growing Steps, Two Series and Chained Rules. Every question shows a row of numbers and four options, and exactly one option continues the series. There is no countdown timer and no negative marking, so take the time each series needs.

  • The numerical reasoning test on JobCannon covers arithmetic, percentages and ratios, number sequences and data interpretation, so series are only one part of it. The number series test is only the series puzzle, 24 of them, with finer sub-scores for the kind of pattern. Take this one for focused practice, then the numerical reasoning test for the wider skill.

  • The common ones are adding or subtracting the same amount, multiplying or dividing by the same factor, gaps that grow by a fixed step or double, square and cube numbers, two series woven into one row, and sequences where each term is built from the previous two. This test includes all of them, in four groups.

  • Start with the gaps between neighbouring numbers. If the gaps are equal, the rule is addition. If they are not, check the ratios, then the gaps between the gaps. If the numbers jump up and down, split the row into odd and even places and look at each half separately. Always test your rule on every term before you pick an answer.

  • Your percent correct maps to five tiers: Developing (0–44%), Average (45–64%), Above Average (65–79%), Superior (80–91%) and Exceptional (92–100%). On 24 questions that is 0–10, 11–15, 16–19, 20–21 and 22–24 correct. No employer cut-off is attached to these bands, and the four sub-scores show more than the overall tier does.

  • No. JobCannon's number series test is an original set of 24 practice questions, not an IQ test and not a copy of any employer or licensed assessment. It has no published norms and no reliability or validity study, so treat the result as practice feedback, not a verdict on your ability or a prediction of how you would score elsewhere.

  • Scratch paper helps and a calculator is your choice, since the arithmetic is light and the challenge is finding the rule. Within one session the test is a single attempt so the score reflects a genuine first run. You can retake it in a new session to see whether practice with the pattern types has helped.
