A standard says what to cover, not how to measure it — the scenarios and key are ours. 3.2/3.4 direct: the key names the step or reason. 3.3 lesson only — its verb is investigate.
How Good Are You at Solving Real Problems? Free 30-Scenario Test
Free problem-solving test for grades 6-8: 30 real-world scenarios scored on identifying problems, choosing sound decision techniques, and connecting good habits to grades.
What is the Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking Test?
The Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking test puts you inside thirty situations that show up in an actual middle-school week — a science project that keeps starting late, a schedule conflict between two clubs that meet the same afternoon, a group project where one person is doing all the work. None of the thirty ask you to solve advanced math or memorize a definition. Each one asks which of four responses is the sound one, and the four are built so that at least one wrong option is genuinely tempting — the popular answer, the fastest answer, the one that avoids an awkward conversation — rather than obviously silly.

The thirty questions are interleaved across three areas rather than grouped into three blocks, so no run of questions can be answered on autopilot once you notice a pattern. Problem-Solving Steps asks you to pick the right move in the actual sequence of solving a problem: naming it precisely, tracing it to a real cause, generating more than one option, and choosing among those options before acting. Real-World Decision Techniques is not about school problems specifically — it is about a personal decision (which club to join, whether to lend money to a friend, how to handle a schedule clash) and which habit of mind actually improves that kind of choice, like weighing pros and cons or checking a claim before acting on it. Problem-Solving & Academic Success asks you to explain the connection rather than just apply it: why does planning ahead, or using time well, or thinking through more than one option, tend to show up in better grades and not just better feelings.
You get an overall band from Developing to Exemplary, a separate score for each of the three areas, and a one-line explanation of why the keyed answer was the sound one for every question — including the ones you got right, since the explanation names the technique you already used without necessarily naming it yourself. There is no norming sample behind these bands and no percentile against other students: the score describes which of these thirty situations you read the way a strong problem-solver would, not where you rank against a national sample. It is not an IQ test and it carries no clinical or diagnostic claim — a low score names specific situations to revisit, not a verdict on how capable a student is.
