The basics

What is the Deductive Reasoning Test?

Deductive reasoning is working out what must be true when the given statements are true, with no room for what is merely likely. The JobCannon Deductive Reasoning Test gives you 25 original questions on syllogisms, if-then rules, ordering puzzles and conclusions from a set of statements, each with four options and exactly one certain answer.

Each question sets out a few statements and asks you to accept them as true, even when they sound odd. You then pick the option that has to follow. The four question types are syllogisms (all, some and none), conditional reasoning (if-then rules, including what a failed condition does and does not tell you), ordering and ranking (who is first, last or in between) and conclusions from statements. Your percent correct places you in one of five bands, with a score for each type.

How is this different from the JobCannon Logical Reasoning Test? That one is the wider first read, mixing syllogisms, conditional logic and analytical puzzles. This test is narrower and stricter: every question asks only what must be true, so an answer that could be true but is not forced is always wrong, and there are no pattern puzzles. No question is shared between the two. There are no published norms, so your score is a practice reading, not an IQ score, not a percentile, and not a prediction of an employer's test.

  • A deductive reasoning test checks whether you can reach a conclusion that is certain from the information given. It does not reward what you already know about the world: you treat the statements as true and decide what must follow. The JobCannon Deductive Reasoning Test has 25 original questions with four options each and exactly one correct answer, so a plausible but unforced option never counts.

  • The JobCannon Logical Reasoning Test is a broader sampler that mixes syllogisms, conditional logic, deductive inference from text and analytical puzzles. The Deductive Reasoning Test is narrower and stricter: every question asks only what must be true, in four fixed types. Take logical reasoning for a wide first look and this one to practise strict deduction. The two share no questions.

  • Four types. Syllogisms (7 questions) ask what follows from statements about all, some or none. Conditional reasoning (6) tests if-then rules, including the traps of reversing a rule or denying its condition. Ordering and ranking (6) asks you to place people or items from partial clues. Conclusions from statements (6) asks which proposed conclusions follow, sometimes as only I, only II, both or neither.

  • Deductive reasoning moves from statements to a conclusion that is certain if the statements are true: all ferries carry bikes, this is a ferry, so it carries bikes. Inductive reasoning moves from observations to a conclusion that is only probable: every ferry I have seen carried bikes, so the next one probably will. This test measures the first kind only, so every right answer is forced.

  • Blind guessing lands near 25 percent, so anything clearly above that shows real signal. The bands are Early Steps in Deduction (0 to 44 percent), Steady Deduction (45 to 64), Strong Deduction (65 to 79), Very Strong Deduction (80 to 91) and Near-Flawless Deduction (92 to 100). These are cut-points on these 25 questions, not percentiles: JobCannon has no norm group and no validity study for this test, so there is no pass mark.

  • It practises the skill employers tend to screen for, following stated rules to a certain conclusion, but it is not a copy of any employer's test and its score cannot be compared with theirs. There is no negative marking here: a wrong answer scores zero, so answer every question, striking out the options the statements rule out first.
