What is the Sleep Difficulty Check-In?
The Sleep Difficulty Check-In looks at five areas that tend to show up when sleep has become a struggle. Sleep-Onset Difficulty asks about the time it takes to actually fall asleep once you're in bed, whether that's a racing mind, physical restlessness, or clock-watching. Sleep-Maintenance Difficulty covers waking up during the night and how hard it is to drift back off. Early-Morning Waking asks whether you're waking up earlier than planned and can't get back to sleep. Daytime Functional Impairment looks at how much poor sleep spills into your energy, focus, and mood the next day. And Sleep-Related Distress checks how much worry or frustration has built up around sleep itself, since that worry can end up making sleep even harder to reach.

It's worth saying clearly: the occasional rough night doesn't mean anything is wrong. Almost everyone has trouble sleeping now and then, before a big day, during a stressful week, in an unfamiliar bed, or for no obvious reason at all. What tends to matter more is whether difficulty falling or staying asleep happens most nights over an extended stretch, whether it's new or has been building gradually, and whether it's starting to affect how you function, think, or feel during the day.
This check-in is a self-reflection tool, not a diagnosis, and it isn't a substitute for an assessment by a doctor or sleep specialist. If sleep difficulty is showing up most nights, has lasted more than a few weeks, or is affecting your safety, mood, or ability to function, it's worth bringing it up with a doctor rather than waiting it out. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a well-established, highly effective treatment, and persistent sleep difficulty typically responds well to the right support.
