What is the Egogram test?

The Egogram, developed by psychologist John Dusay (1972) as a visual extension of Transactional Analysis (TA), maps how much energy you invest in five ego states: Critical Parent (CP), Nurturing Parent (NP), Adult (A), Free Child (FC), and Adapted Child (AC). The pattern across all five — not just the highest score — reveals your characteristic interaction style.

  • An egogram is a bar chart showing your relative energy investment across the five Transactional Analysis ego states: CP (Critical Parent), NP (Nurturing Parent), A (Adult), FC (Free Child), and AC (Adapted Child). Developed by John Dusay in 1972, it visualises how you typically show up in interactions.

  • CP (Critical Parent) = judgement, standards, rules. NP (Nurturing Parent) = care, support, warmth. A (Adult) = logical, present-focused problem-solving. FC (Free Child) = spontaneity, creativity, play. AC (Adapted Child) = compliance, people-pleasing, or rebellion in response to authority.

  • No single profile is ideal. A high Adult state supports clear thinking, but too much can feel cold. A high Free Child supports creativity but can lack structure. The healthiest profile is context-dependent — the ability to access all five states flexibly is the real goal.

  • Dusay proposed that the total psychic energy across all five ego states is relatively constant. This means that if you work to strengthen one state (e.g. raising Free Child), energy tends to shift from another state (often Adapted Child). The egogram is therefore a dynamic map, not a fixed diagnosis.
