Your Dominant Ego State
Nurturing Parent
Notices who is struggling and moves towards them
Take the Egogram testNurturing Parent is the ego state that notices when someone is struggling and moves towards them with care.
Leading on it means you are the person people trust to hold space, offer encouragement and make sure nobody is left behind. NP energy is a real gift in a group: you create environments where people feel safe enough to be honest, to fail and to try again. The shadow is over-giving. When NP runs high and the other states run low, you can sacrifice your own needs, attract dependency instead of growth, or slide from caring into controlling. The growth edge is knowing when to support and when to let someone sit with their own discomfort, because that is also care.
Strengths
- People tell you the truth earlier than they tell anyone else, because you have made honesty cheap to attempt.
- You notice the person going quiet in a group, and noticing is most of what support actually consists of.
- Encouragement from you carries weight because it is specific rather than reflexive, and people can tell the difference.
- You make failure survivable for other people, which is the precondition for anyone taking a worthwhile risk.
- Long relationships tend to survive their rough stretches with you in them, and that is a compounding advantage.
Growth Edges
- Over-giving has no built-in limit, and the people most willing to accept endless support are rarely the ones who grow from it.
- Rescuing someone from a consequence can quietly remove the only teacher that was going to reach them.
- Your own needs go unstated for long enough that they become invisible to you, not just to everyone else.
- Care and control run closer together than they feel. Deciding what someone needs is a small step from deciding for them.
- Resentment is the usual end point of unreciprocated nurturing, and it arrives suddenly after a long silence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nurturing Parent the same as being kind?
Not quite. Kindness is a value. Nurturing Parent is a way of speaking, one that positions you as the one providing and the other person as the one receiving. That position is exactly right when someone is struggling and quietly patronising when they are not, which is why the same warmth can land two completely different ways.
What is the difference between Nurturing Parent and Adapted Child?
They can look identical from the outside and they come from opposite places. NP gives because it sees a need. Adapted Child gives because it is reading the room for what will keep it accepted. If you find yourself unable to say no rather than choosing not to, the state doing the work is probably AC.
Can Nurturing Parent become controlling?
Yes, and it is the most common way this state goes wrong. It starts as deciding what someone needs and becomes deciding for them. The tell is how you feel when the person declines your help: mild disappointment is care, and a flash of being wronged is control wearing care as a coat.
Why do high NP people burn out?
Because the state has no stopping rule of its own. There is always someone who could use support, and each individual instance is small. The shipped advice is the right check: ask whether the care you give freely is also flowing back to you. Sustainable nurturing is mutual, and one-directional nurturing has an expiry date.
Does high NP mean I am a good listener?
It means you move towards distress, which is a necessary part and not the whole of it. Listening also requires sitting with someone without moving to fix, and that is genuinely harder for high NP than for anyone else, because doing nothing feels like failing them.
Should I try to lower my Nurturing Parent score?
Only if it is costing you. Egogram is not a ranking and there is no target profile. The useful question is not how high NP is, but whether the other states have enough room. Adult in particular gives NP a way to check whether help is wanted before it is delivered.
