Your Dominant Ego State
Adult
Gathers facts, responds to the present, assesses rather than reacts
Take the Egogram testAdult is the ego state that thinks clearly, gathers facts and responds to what is actually happening rather than reacting from the past or from emotional pressure.
Leading on it means you stay calm where others become reactive, and you supply the rationality groups often badly need. Adult-dominant people get trusted for their judgement: in a crisis you are the one separating the real problem from the noise, neither over-comforting nor over-criticising. The shadow is emotional distance. A very high Adult with low Free Child or low Nurturing Parent reads as cold, over-analytical and hard to connect with. The growth edge is adding some warmth and play without giving up the clarity, which is your best asset.
Strengths
- You separate the problem from the noise while everyone else is still reacting to the noise.
- Facts get gathered before conclusions get drawn, which sounds obvious and is rare under time pressure.
- You are not moved by whoever is loudest, so the quiet correct answer gets a hearing in rooms you are in.
- Your judgement is trusted precisely because it is not a mood, and people can bring you bad news without managing you first.
- You update when the evidence changes, rather than defending the position you arrived with.
Growth Edges
- Clarity without warmth reads as coldness, and people conclude you do not care long before they conclude you are right.
- Not every situation has a problem to solve. Some have a person who needs to be heard, and Adult is the wrong tool for that.
- Analysis can become a hiding place, a way of staying in the assessment because the decision would cost something.
- Spontaneity gets treated as irrational and therefore declined, and a life optimised for sense can end up short of aliveness.
- Your own feelings arrive as data to be processed, which is efficient until it means they do not get felt at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Adult the best ego state to lead with?
It is the one people most often say they want more of, and Egogram is still not a ranking. An Adult-only profile is not a healthy profile, it is a flat one. The state is powerful because it can arbitrate between the other four, and it has nothing to arbitrate if the other four are silent.
Does high Adult mean I am unemotional?
No. It means your default response to a situation is to assess it. Feelings still arrive, they just tend to be processed rather than expressed, which is why other people can experience you as flat when you are not. Low Free Child alongside high Adult is what produces the version that genuinely reads as cold.
What is the Adult ego state in transactional analysis?
Berne described it as the here-and-now processor: the part that takes in current information rather than replaying a Parent script or a Child reaction. It is the only one of the three original states not built from the past, which is exactly why it is the one that can decide which of the others gets to speak.
Can too much Adult be a problem in relationships?
Regularly. Most relationship conversations are not requests for analysis, and answering a feeling with a solution ends the conversation without resolving it. The shipped advice is to let yourself be a little spontaneous, not because it is rational but because aliveness matters too.
How do I raise Adult if it is low?
Slow the gap between the trigger and the response. Most non-Adult reactions are fast, and almost any deliberate pause routes the situation through the assessing state instead. Writing the situation down before responding works for the same reason: it is very hard to write a sentence from pure Child.
Is Adult the same as being logical or intelligent?
No. It is a mode of engaging, not a level of ability. Someone can be highly intelligent and habitually respond from Critical Parent, and someone of ordinary ability can be reliably Adult in a crisis. The test is measuring which voice speaks first, not how good it is.
