Your Dominant Ego State
Free Child
Feels, plays, creates, and acts without filtering first
Take the Egogram testFree Child is the ego state that feels, plays, creates and acts with unfiltered spontaneity.
Leading on it makes you energising to be around: you bring laughter, enthusiasm and a willingness to try things more cautious people will not. FC is the source of creativity, joy and authentic expression, and when you are in flow, fully absorbed and freely moving, you often do your best work and loosen everyone else up alongside you. The shadow is impulsivity. When FC runs high without enough Adult to balance it, decisions suffer and commitments start to feel like cages. The growth edge is adding just enough structure to build on the energy, keeping the fire lit without burning the house down.
Strengths
- You give other people permission to stop performing, and a room where nobody is performing gets more done than one where everybody is.
- Ideas get tried rather than discussed, and trying is how most things are actually found out.
- Enthusiasm is contagious in a way that argument is not, so you move groups that reason alone would not shift.
- Flow comes easily to you, and full absorption is where the genuinely original work tends to happen.
- You feel things straightforwardly rather than through three layers of interpretation, which makes you easy to read and easy to trust.
Growth Edges
- Impulse and decision are the same event, so the consequences arrive without anyone having considered them.
- Commitments start to feel like constraints rather than choices, and the instinct is to escape rather than renegotiate.
- Follow-through is the weak point. Starting is effortless and the unglamorous middle stretch is where things quietly stall.
- Spontaneity is delightful to be around and hard to plan around, and the people planning around you pay that cost silently.
- Boredom is treated as a signal to move, even when staying was the thing that was about to pay off.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Free Child and Adapted Child?
They are the two halves of the Child state and they are close to opposites. Free Child responds as it actually feels. Adapted Child responds as it learned would be acceptable. One is spontaneous, the other is calculated for approval, and a person can move between them several times in a single conversation.
Does high Free Child mean I am immature?
No. Child in transactional analysis is a description of where a response originates, not an assessment of maturity. Free Child is where creativity, humour, curiosity and genuine feeling live. What immaturity actually looks like is Free Child with no Adult to check it, which is a different profile.
How do I keep the spontaneity but finish things?
The shipped advice is to pair one spontaneous impulse with one deliberate follow-through. Structure works best applied to the boring parts and kept away from the creative ones, so the fire stays lit while the fuel stops running out. Trying to suppress the impulse instead usually kills both.
Is Free Child the same as extraversion?
No. Extraversion is about where your energy comes from socially. Free Child is about whether your response is filtered before it leaves you. A quiet person can be very high Free Child, and an outgoing person can be running almost entirely on Adapted Child in company.
Why do people find high Free Child hard to work with?
Not because of the energy, which most people enjoy. It is the planning. When the state is dominant, commitments made enthusiastically on Monday can feel like constraints by Thursday. The people who depend on those commitments absorb that cost, usually without saying so.
Can Free Child be too low?
Yes, and it is a common profile in people who did well by being reliable. Low FC alongside high Adult or high Adapted Child produces someone competent, considerate and slowly draining. Aliveness is not decorative, and it is usually the first thing that goes and the last thing anyone names.
