Your Dominant Ego State
Adapted Child
Reads the room early and adjusts before anyone has to ask
Take the Egogram testAdapted Child is the ego state that learned, early on, to read the room and adjust accordingly.
Leading on it makes you socially attuned in a way most people are not: you sense tension before it surfaces, you are diplomatic under pressure and you are easy to be around because you are constantly making room for other people. That is a real skill and it keeps a lot of relationships intact. The shadow is the accumulated cost of constant adaptation. When AC dominates, your own wants become chronically invisible, even to you, and agreement stops being a decision and becomes a reflex. The growth edge is separating genuine consideration from trained self-erasure.
Strengths
- You register tension in a room before it is spoken, which gives you time to defuse things other people never see coming.
- Diplomacy under pressure is second nature, so conversations that were heading for a rupture often quietly do not.
- You are easy to be around, and that is not a small thing. Groups form around people who make room.
- Rules and expectations get followed without supervision, which makes you low-maintenance in any structured environment.
- You read what someone actually needs rather than what they said, and you are right about it more often than not.
Growth Edges
- Agreement stops being a decision and becomes a reflex, so nobody, including you, can tell what you actually think.
- Your own preferences go unstated for so long that they become genuinely hard to locate when someone finally asks.
- Resentment builds underneath the accommodation, and it surfaces long after the moment it could have been addressed.
- Compliance reads as consent to everyone else, which means people keep asking, in good faith, for things that cost you.
- Conflict is avoided rather than navigated, so small disagreements are carried instead of settled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a high Adapted Child score the same as people-pleasing?
People-pleasing is the version that has stopped being a choice. AC covers the whole range, from ordinary social attunement to reflexive self-erasure. The dividing line is whether you can say no when you want to. If accommodating is something you do rather than something that happens to you, the state is working as intended.
How is Adapted Child different from Free Child?
They are the two halves of the Child state and they are close to opposites. Free Child responds as it actually feels. Adapted Child responds as it learned would be acceptable. Most people move between them several times in a single conversation, usually without noticing the switch.
Why does high AC lead to resentment?
Because the accommodation is invisible to everyone but you. Other people experience a series of easy yeses and keep asking in good faith, while you experience an accumulating cost nobody has acknowledged. Resentment is what that gap turns into, and it usually surfaces long after the point where a single sentence would have prevented it.
Does high Adapted Child mean I had a difficult childhood?
Not necessarily. Transactional analysis holds that AC forms wherever adjusting was rewarded, which includes plenty of loving households where being easy was simply the thing that got approval. The state is a learned strategy, not a diagnosis, and it does not imply anything about how you were treated.
How do I start saying what I actually want?
The shipped advice is deliberately small: state one preference or opinion today without softening it or apologising for it first. Starting with something low-stakes matters, because the reflex is strongest exactly where the stakes are high, and it loosens through repetition rather than through resolve.
Is Adapted Child a bad ego state to lead with?
No. Egogram is not a ranking and all five states are functional. Social attunement is genuinely valuable and cannot be faked by people who lack it. The problem is never AC itself, it is AC with too little Adult to check whether adapting is warranted and too little Free Child to have a preference in the first place.
