What the Adult Half of the Grid Means
The other four positions on the 顔タイプ診断 grid — Feminine, Soft-Elegant, Elegant, and Cool — sit on the adult side, defined by longer proportions and more defined structure than the childlike quadrant covered in the companion article.
The shared rule across all four is close to the inverse of the childlike family's rule: structure and quality of fabric generally read correctly, and softness pushed too far in the direction of sweetness or casualness is the recurring mismatch, in the same way severity was the recurring mismatch on the other side of the grid.
Feminine
Adult and curved, in the fullest sense of both — the position on the grid closest to conventional softness, but read through mature proportions rather than youthful ones. Drape, fluid fabric, and rounded detail are its natural territory.
The mismatch runs in two directions here, which makes it a slightly trickier type to dress than it first appears. Very sharp tailoring fights it, the same as it fights Cute — but so does anything deliberately girlish or overly sweet, which reads as a mismatch in the opposite direction, borrowing from the childlike register rather than the adult one it actually belongs to.
Soft-Elegant
Adult and refined, with genuinely mixed line quality — neither fully curved nor fully straight, which makes it the type most defined by restraint rather than by a strong pull in either direction. Understatement is where it is strongest, and it is the type most likely to be flattened by anything loud.
Quality of fabric does more work for Soft-Elegant than for almost any other type on the grid. A plain garment in excellent material reads correctly; the same silhouette in a cheaper fabric reads as merely plain rather than deliberately understated, and the distance between those two readings is larger for Soft-Elegant than for a type with a stronger inherent register to fall back on.
Elegant
Adult, defined, and formal in register — the type that carries genuine structure and scale without being swamped by it, in a way the childlike quadrant simply cannot. Composed rather than approachable is the default read, and clothing that leans into that composure agrees with it.
The characteristic mistake with Elegant runs opposite to most of the childlike types: dressing it down too far in the interest of seeming more casual or more approachable reads as underdressed rather than relaxed, because the face's own register is already doing formal work the clothing is trying to undo.
Cool
The most adult and most straight position on the entire grid, directly opposite Cute. Sharp, self-possessed, and the only one of the eight types that can wear real severity — heavy tailoring, minimal ornament, hard lines — without it reading as effort or costume.
The mirror-image mistake to tailoring on a Cute face is soft, sweet styling on a Cool one: it does not read as approachable so much as unconvincing, a register the face is not actually offering being layered on top of one that reads clearly on its own.
Why the Adult Register Gets Overdressed Rather Than Underdressed
The failure mode across the adult four runs in the opposite direction from the childlike four: too casual, too soft, too undone, rather than too formal. There is no real equivalent warning here about "too much structure" — the adult register can generally absorb more formality than most people instinctively give it credit for, especially Cool, which sits furthest from any risk of overdressing.
The corrective advice for Feminine, Soft-Elegant, Elegant, or Cool is usually the mirror image of the childlike advice: trust the structure rather than softening it in the name of approachability, because the softening is what reads as the mismatch, not the structure itself.
Colour and the Adult Family
The interaction between face type and colour season runs differently on the adult side. Where the childlike family can be flattened by colour pitched too dark, the adult family — Elegant and Cool especially — can be flattened by colour pitched too soft or too pale, since a muted palette undercuts the definition the face type is otherwise offering.
Soft-Elegant is the partial exception: its own register already leans toward understatement, so it tolerates a quieter palette better than Elegant or Cool do. As with the childlike family, the two tests answer different questions — structure from face type, palette from colour season — and reading them together gives a more complete picture than either alone.
