Two Skills, One Reputation
The terms get used interchangeably, and the conflation hides a gap that shows up in real work constantly.
Logical reasoning asks a single question: does the conclusion follow from the premises as stated? It is formal, content-blind, and has right answers.
Critical thinking asks the questions that come before and after: are these premises credible, who is asserting them, what has been left out, and what would change my mind?
Logic is a component of critical thinking. It is not the whole of it, and it is not even the part that fails most often.
What Logic Deliberately Ignores
Formal logic is indifferent to truth. This is a feature, not an oversight, and it is where the two skills separate.
"All swans are purple; this bird is a swan; therefore this bird is purple" is a perfectly valid argument. Every step follows. The conclusion is nonsense because a premise is false, and logic has no machinery for noticing that.
Validity and soundness
- Valid — the conclusion cannot be false if the premises are true. A property of the structure alone.
- Sound — valid, and the premises are actually true. A property of the structure plus the world.
A logical reasoning test measures validity almost exclusively. Assessing soundness requires knowing something about the subject matter, which a standardised test cannot assume.
What Critical Thinking Adds
Everything logic brackets off.
- Source evaluation. Who produced this figure, with what method, and what interest do they have in the result?
- Evidence quality. Is this a controlled study, an observational correlation, or an anecdote presented with confidence?
- Recognising omission. The most common real-world manipulation is not a bad inference but a missing fact — and no formal check detects an absence.
- Self-scrutiny. Noticing that you found an argument convincing because you already agreed with its conclusion.
Can Someone Be Strong at One and Weak at the Other?
Routinely, and in both directions.
Strong logic, weak criticism
The recognisable version is the person who reasons impeccably from premises they never examined. Every step defensible, the whole edifice built on an assumption nobody checked.
This failure mode is over-represented among the formally trained, because facility with the machinery makes the machinery feel like the whole job. It is also the more dangerous of the two, since the conclusions arrive with unearned confidence.
Strong criticism, weak logic
The mirror image: good instincts about credibility and interest, poor discipline about what actually follows. This person correctly distrusts a source and then draws a conclusion the evidence does not support.
Scepticism without formal discipline slides into treating all claims as equally uncertain, which is its own kind of error.
Which One Do Tests Measure?
Mostly logic, because logic has unambiguous right answers and critical thinking largely does not.
Syllogisms and conditionals can be scored mechanically. "Is this source credible?" cannot be scored without importing the test-writer's judgement about the subject matter — which is exactly what standardisation is supposed to eliminate.
Where the instruments try
Critical-reasoning batteries approach it obliquely, with items asking which statement is an assumption of an argument, which would most weaken it, or which is a flaw in its reasoning.
These are a genuine step beyond pure validity, and they remain closed-ended. The candidate chooses from options rather than generating the objection nobody listed — and generating it is the skill that matters at work.
Which Matters More Professionally?
Critical thinking, in most roles, and by a clear margin.
Real professional errors are rarely invalid inferences. They are conclusions drawn from an unrepresentative sample, a metric that stopped measuring what it used to, or a report whose author had an obvious interest in the finding.
Logic is the floor. Someone who cannot follow an argument cannot do analytical work at all — but almost everyone clears that floor, so it rarely discriminates between candidates who reached the interview.
The exceptions
Some fields genuinely are logic-first. Formal verification, mathematical proof, contract drafting, and parts of software engineering are domains where the premises are stipulated and validity is the entire task.
In those roles the ordering reverses, and formal precision is the thing that actually separates people.
Are Critical Thinking Tests Reliable?
Less so than logical tests, and for a structural reason rather than a fixable one.
Logical items have answers derivable from the rules. Critical-thinking items require judgements about plausibility, and plausibility judgements vary with the reader's knowledge — so the "correct" answer encodes the test-writer's assumptions along with the reasoning.
Well-constructed instruments handle this by keeping the subject matter deliberately mundane, which limits how much genuine critical thinking they can sample. The measurement problem is real, and it is why these scores warrant more caution than a matrix score does.
Does Studying Logic Make You a Better Thinker?
Partly, and the qualification is important.
Formal instruction reliably improves performance on formal tasks. Learning the conditional fallacies means you stop committing them, and that transfers to arguments phrased in similar terms.
Transfer to unstructured everyday reasoning is weaker. The Wason selection task result — near-universal failure on an abstract conditional, easy success on the same structure framed as a social rule — is the standing evidence that reasoning skill does not travel across framings as readily as one would hope.
What does transfer
The habit rather than the formalism. Asking "what exactly is being claimed, and what would have to be true for it to follow?" is a disposition, and it survives changes of subject matter far better than any notation does.
That question is where logical reasoning and critical thinking meet, and it is the one worth practising deliberately.
