Typing speed is quoted as a single number — words per minute — and that number is the less useful half of the measurement. Accuracy is the half that determines how long a piece of text actually takes you to produce, and the two are measured together for a reason. There is also a third factor nobody quotes at all, which is what happens to both when the text stops being ordinary prose.
Speed Without Accuracy Is Not Speed
A words-per-minute figure counts keystrokes that arrived. It says nothing about how many of them were the right ones. That distinction seems pedantic until you follow the work through to the point where the text is finished, at which point it turns out to be the entire question.
Every error has a cost with three parts: noticing it, going back to it, and fixing it. The noticing is the expensive one, because it either interrupts your flow immediately or it does not happen at all and the error survives into whatever you send. Neither outcome is captured by a raw speed measurement, which is why WPM quoted alone consistently flatters the fast-and-sloppy typist.
The practical version: two people typing the same document, one faster with a scattering of errors and one slower and clean, often finish at the same time. If the document is going to someone else, the clean typist finished earlier, because the fast typist’s correction pass has not happened yet.
Why Prose Is the Easy Case
Skilled typing is largely a motor-memory activity. Frequent letter sequences — -tion, the, -ing — stop being executed key by key and become single learned movements. This is why fluent typists cannot reliably say where a letter is on the keyboard while sitting away from one: the knowledge lives in the hands rather than in a mental map.
The consequence is that a typing score measured on plain English prose is measuring the best-supported case there is. Ordinary text is exactly the material those learned patterns were built from, so it produces the highest number you are capable of. It is a real number. It is just not the one that describes your working day.

What Symbols Do to Both Numbers
Numbers and punctuation break motor memory. A digit sequence, a bracket, a slash, a hyphenated version string — these have no frequent-pattern support, so they fall back to conscious, one-key-at-a-time execution, often with a shift key involved. Speed drops and error rate rises simultaneously, which is the worst combination available.
The size of the drop between prose and symbol-heavy text varies enormously between people, and it is not predicted by prose speed. Some very fast prose typists collapse on technical copy because their fluency is built entirely on ordinary words. Others show almost no gap, usually because their daily work is full of symbols and the patterns have been trained.
That gap is the most job-relevant thing in a typing result and the thing a single-round test cannot see. If your work involves data entry, code, invoice references, product SKUs or anything with a structured identifier in it, your round-three number describes your job and your round-one number describes a hobby.
Reading Your Own Result
Look at three things, in this order. First, accuracy — because a speed figure attached to poor accuracy is not a speed figure. Second, the gap between your first and third round, because that tells you whether your fluency generalises. Third, and last, the headline WPM.
If accuracy is the weak part, the fix is to type slower on purpose for a while. It feels like going backwards and it is not: practising at a pace where errors are rare trains the correct movement, while practising at the edge trains error-and-recovery as a single habit. Speed returns quickly on top of accurate patterns and very slowly on top of inaccurate ones.
If the round-one to round-three gap is the weak part, general typing practice will not close it, because general practice is prose practice. What closes it is deliberately typing the material that breaks you — the symbol strings and number sequences specific to your work.
Where Typing Speed Actually Matters
It is worth being honest about the scope. For most knowledge work, typing speed stopped being the bottleneck a long time ago; thinking is slower than typing, and a large speed increase buys very little when the constraint is deciding what to write. Treating WPM as a proxy for productivity in those roles is a category error.
Where it genuinely matters is transcription, live note-taking, customer support at volume, data entry, and any role where you are typing something that already exists in finished form. In those, the constraint really is the keyboard, and the difference between a mediocre and a strong typist is a difference in output rather than in comfort.
