Norman Rosenthal and colleagues documented this sleep and appetite profile as part of the original 1984 description of seasonal affective disorder, and a related 1989 study of carbohydrate- and protein-rich meals in seasonal patients (Rosenthal et al., Biological Psychiatry) explored the appetite side of the same underlying picture.
Is Oversleeping in Winter Always a Red Flag?
No. Wanting a bit more sleep on short, dark days is extremely common and not a problem on its own. It becomes more meaningful when it's part of a broader, repeating pattern — paired with low mood and appetite shifts, and reversing again each spring.
Why Morning Light Is the First-Line Fix
Reduced daylight is thought to disrupt circadian timing, which is a plausible reason oversleeping clusters with the seasonal pattern in the first place. That's also why treatments built around morning light exposure, not sleep restriction, are the standard first approach.
