Significant Trauma Response Symptoms
You are not alone. Effective treatment exists.
Take the Trauma Response Check-InThis result means a strong, consistent pattern across all four clusters this check-in looks at: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative shifts in mood or thinking, and heightened alertness.
At this level, most professionals would recommend reaching out to a mental-health professional soon rather than waiting. Trauma-focused therapies with strong evidence, trauma-focused CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and EMDR, are effective and widely available, and many people see meaningful improvement once treatment starts. This is a self-reflection tool, not a clinical diagnosis, and it cannot assess crisis risk. If you are having thoughts of self-harm, please contact a crisis line right away. You are not alone, and help works.

Frequently Asked Questions
I am thinking about hurting myself. What do I do right now?
Please reach out to a crisis line immediately. In the US: 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), call or text. In the UK: 116 123 (Samaritans, free, 24/7) or text SHOUT to 85258. In Canada: 988. In Australia: 13 11 14 (Lifeline). If you feel you cannot keep yourself safe, go to your nearest A&E / emergency room, or call your local emergency number (999 in the UK, 911 in the US). You do not have to be in immediate physical danger to call, they are there to listen.
Is a high score the same as a PTSD diagnosis?
No. This result is a strong signal that a formal evaluation with a mental-health professional is worth doing soon, but only a licensed clinician can make a PTSD diagnosis, typically through a structured clinical interview. This self-reflection tool cannot diagnose on its own.
Will I always feel like this?
No. Trauma-focused CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and EMDR all have strong evidence for reducing trauma-response symptoms, and many people see significant improvement within a course of treatment, often 8-16 sessions depending on the approach and the trauma involved. Effective treatment for this pattern exists and is widely used.
What is the very first step today?
Pick one small, doable action: call your GP or a therapist to book an appointment, or tell one person you trust what you are going through. If distress feels urgent, contact a crisis line first (see above). One step is enough for today.
Should I keep working?
Talk to a clinician rather than deciding alone. In the UK, a GP can issue a fit note and reasonable adjustments may apply under the Equality Act 2010. In the US, FMLA leave or short-term disability may apply, and the ADA can provide workplace protections. A professional can help you weigh what is realistic right now.
