The strong candidate names two or three plausible drivers (cost, mix, price, volume) and runs a quick sanity check on each before committing to a deep dive.
Treating absence of disconfirming evidence as positive evidence is the fourth. "We have not seen any churn impact from the price increase" is not evidence that price did not drive churn. It is the absence of one specific kind of evidence about a system that may be operating on a delay.
