When should I see a doctor for depression?

If sad mood, loss of interest, or other depressive symptoms persist two weeks or longer, cause functional impairment, or are accompanied by suicidal thoughts.

Suicidal thoughts, plans, or attempts; severe hopelessness; inability to care for self; command hallucinations; or acute danger require emergency services.

Should I call a therapist or doctor first?

Either. Primary care doctors can diagnose and treat depression. Mental health specialists (therapists, psychiatrists) provide specialized care. Insurance may require primary care referral.

Can depression go untreated?

Some mild depression resolves with time and support. Moderate-to-severe depression rarely resolves untreated. Early intervention improves outcomes and prevents deterioration.
