Cognitive Ability Test Practice

What it measures
Verbal reasoning
Word meanings, relationships and short logical statements about language. This is not a vocabulary test in the school sense; it checks how quickly you can extract a relationship or a valid conclusion from a short piece of text without a passage in front of you to reread, underline or work through slowly.
Numerical reasoning
Arithmetic, ratios, percentages and number sequences, usually without a calculator available to lean on. The maths itself is rarely advanced or much beyond what most people covered at school. The test is checking whether you can do it fast and accurately under pressure, not whether you understand the underlying method behind each question.
Logical or abstract reasoning
Pattern and rule-based questions using letters, numbers or shapes instead of words. These feel unfamiliar to people who have not practised them recently, which is exactly why they show up on almost every cognitive ability test regardless of vendor, as a way of testing raw reasoning stripped of subject knowledge.
Spatial reasoning
Shape rotation, folding and relationship questions that test mental manipulation of visual information rather than anything read or calculated. This family tends to correlate least with school subjects, so it is often the one candidates have practised least, and where a bit of targeted prep tends to help the most.
Working speed under time pressure
Across every family above, the shared thread is a time limit tight enough that few people finish. That is not incidental to the design. Employers are using speed as a rough proxy for how quickly someone processes new information on the job, not just whether they can eventually get the right answer given enough time.

E25. The letter moves one step forward through the alphabet each time (A, B, C, D, then E) while the number is the position squared (1 squared, 2 squared, 3 squared, 4 squared, then 5 squared, which is 25). Spotting that the number follows a squaring rule, not a simple addition, is the key step.

12. Only the small cubes sitting on an edge of the original cube, but not at a corner, have exactly two painted faces. A 3 by 3 by 3 cube has 12 edges, and each edge contributes exactly one such cube, giving 12 in total.
How scores are read
Low relative score
Do not over-read a single low score on a heavily timed test. Time pressure, unfamiliarity with the format and test anxiety all suppress scores independently of underlying ability, and a one-off sitting is a noisy measurement.
Typical or mid-range score
This is where most test-takers land on most vendors' tests. It is one input among several an employer is weighing, not a full picture of how you would perform in the actual role.
High relative score
On average, higher scores correlate with faster learning curves in published research on general cognitive ability. That average relationship says very little about any one individual's judgement, motivation or fit for a specific job.

How to prepare
Identify exactly which test you are taking
Check the invite email for a vendor name. If it names Wonderlic, CCAT, SHL or another specific product, go practise that exact format, since timing and item mix differ enough between vendors that generic practice alone will not fix your pacing.
Practise untimed first, then add the clock
Learn the methods without pressure so mistakes come from the format, not from missing knowledge. Once accuracy is solid, reintroduce a tight timer so your last stretch of practice matches the real test's pressure, not a relaxed version of it.
Target your weakest item family specifically
Most people are stronger in either verbal or numerical reasoning and weaker in spatial or abstract reasoning, without necessarily realising which side they lean toward. A short diagnostic set across all four families tells you where to concentrate your limited prep time instead of guessing.
Run at least one full mixed-format mock
A test made of separate topic drills feels different from the real thing, where types are often interleaved and you cannot warm up on one before switching. One full-length run under real time pressure catches problems drills alone will not show.
Set yourself a per-question decision rule
Since most cognitive tests are built so few people finish, decide in advance how long you will give a stuck question, such as 20 seconds, before making your best guess and moving on. Protecting the easy points later matters more than any one hard question.
Do not neglect basic logistics
A stable connection, a quiet room and a working webcam if the test is proctored remove entirely avoidable risk on the day itself. Losing time to a technical problem partway through a tightly timed test can cost you more than any actual content gap ever would.
