A mood swing check-in is a short self-reflection exercise. It asks about elevated mood, sleep, thinking, and behaviour over recent weeks, patterns sometimes grouped together under the word "hypomania". It is not a diagnostic tool.
What it actually measures
The check-in walks through six areas that tend to move together during a hypomanic-type episode: elevated or unusually good mood, a reduced need for sleep without feeling tired the next day, an inflated sense of confidence or importance, racing or crowded thoughts, impulsive decisions, and a jump in energy or goal-directed activity. Each area gets a few questions, and the tool looks at how many of them cluster together, rather than scoring any single answer in isolation.
Why clustering matters more than any one answer
Everyone has the occasional great week, a burst of energy, a night of poor sleep before a deadline. What clinicians actually look for is several of these patterns showing up together, for several days in a row, in a way that feels different from a person's usual self.
A single "yes" answer means very little on its own. Several "yes" answers across different areas, lined up with a specific stretch of days, means more.
What a result does and doesn't tell you
A higher result means more of these patterns showed up together in your answers, and that it may be worth a conversation with a doctor or therapist. It does not mean you have bipolar disorder, and a lower result does not rule it out either, especially if you were reflecting on a calmer period. Bipolar disorder can only be diagnosed by a licensed psychiatrist or qualified clinician, usually after a detailed interview covering your full history, not from a short online exercise.
Who might find this useful
People who have noticed a recent stretch that felt different, unusually productive, unusually confident, unusually short on sleep without the tiredness to match, often find it useful to put words to that experience before a doctor's appointment. It can also be useful to retake during a different period, since seeing how the pattern changes over time tells you more than any single result.
