"Good with computers" is not a skill, it is a compliment, and it does not tell a teacher, a parent, or an employer anything useful about what a person can actually do. Workplace technology literacy is the narrower, testable version: can you pick the right tool for the setting you are in, and do you understand how technology is changing the jobs you will eventually have. Those are two different questions, and most people are stronger at one than the other.
The Short Version
Workplace technology literacy is not knowing how to use any particular app. Apps change every few years — the group chat tool a class uses in Year 7 will not be the one their workplace uses a decade later. What does not change as fast is the judgement underneath: reading a situation and matching it to the right kind of tool, and understanding the direction technology is pushing work in general.
That is why the two areas split cleanly. One is a skill you apply in the moment — this meeting, this group project, this shared document. The other is a kind of literacy about the world — what automation has already done to jobs, and what it is plausibly about to do next.
Area One — Picking the Right Tool for the Setting
A group project run entirely in person does not need the same tools as one where two members are only available after school. A fully virtual team cannot lean on "we'll just talk about it at lunch" the way an in-person one can. Picking the right tool means noticing which constraint you are actually working under — who can be in the same room, at the same time, seeing the same screen — and choosing accordingly.
People get this wrong in both directions. Some over-tool an in-person task, scheduling a video call for something four people sitting at the same table could finish in ninety seconds. Others under-tool a remote one, assuming a single group chat message counts as "everyone knows", when half the group was offline when it was sent.
Area Two — Understanding Where the Work Is Going
The second area is less about doing and more about reading. Which parts of a job get automated first is not random — it tends to be the repetitive, rule-based parts, not the ones that need judgement about people. Understanding that pattern is what lets someone look at a career and make a realistic guess about which parts of it are stable and which are likely to change.
This is the area people are weakest in, mostly because it is rarely taught directly. Nobody sits a twelve-year-old down and walks through how automation actually spreads through an industry — they either hear vague alarm ("robots are taking all the jobs") or vague reassurance ("don't worry about it"), and neither one is a skill.
What It Is Not
- Not typing speed — that is a separate, measurable skill with its own test.
- Not coding ability — you can be excellent at picking tools and reading trends without writing a line of code.
- Not a prediction of which job you will have — it is a way of thinking about jobs in general.
- Not the same as liking technology — some of the most tool-literate people are the ones most sceptical of adding a new app.
