Why is Extraversion the X in HEXACO?
Because the E was already taken. HEXACO spells out Honesty-Humility, Emotionality, eXtraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness and Openness to Experience, so Extraversion contributes its X. The acronym also nods to a hexagon, one factor per side.
Is HEXACO Extraversion the same as Big Five Extraversion?
Very close. This is one of the factors that carries over cleanly between the two models. The main HEXACO reshuffle happens around Agreeableness and Emotionality, not here.
Does a low score mean I am shy?
Not necessarily. Low Extraversion is mostly about preference and battery: large gatherings drain rather than charge you, and you do your best connecting one to one. Shyness is anxiety about social evaluation, which is closer to Emotionality. Plenty of people are low Extraversion and entirely unbothered in company.
Are extraverts better leaders?
Not reliably. Extraversion helps with visibility, pitching and holding a room, which is why it correlates with getting into leadership roles. Whether it predicts doing the job well is a separate question, and quieter leaders do better with teams full of people who arrive with their own ideas.
Can I raise my Extraversion score?
Behaviour is trainable even when the underlying preference is stable. You can get good at running a room without it becoming the thing that recharges you. The score reflects where your energy comes from, and that part moves slowly if at all.
Is this the same as being an ambivert?
Ambivert is an informal word for scoring near the middle. HEXACO reports a continuous score rather than sorting people into extravert and introvert boxes, so a middling result is a normal outcome and not a special third category.
