Close enough that the two are usually read the same way. Openness carries over between the models with little reshuffling, unlike Agreeableness and Emotionality, which HEXACO reorganises around the sixth factor.
Does high Openness mean I am creative?
It means you are drawn to novelty, ideas and aesthetic experience, which is where creative work starts. Whether anything comes of it depends on Conscientiousness doing the other half of the job. Openness supplies the material; finishing turns it into output.
Does Openness mean intelligence?
No. Openness is about what you are drawn to, not how well you reason. There is a modest relationship with measures of verbal ability in the research literature, but a high Openness score is not an IQ result and should never be read as one. Our reasoning tests measure something different.
What does a low Openness score look like?
You prefer the concrete, the proven and the practical. Established methods are established for a reason, and you would rather improve something that works than replace it with something unproven. That is stability, and organisations run on it.
Why is Openness the O in HEXACO?
The acronym runs Honesty-Humility, Emotionality, eXtraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Openness to Experience. It is also a nod to a hexagon, six sides for six factors. The letter to watch is E, which is Emotionality here and not Extraversion.
Can Openness change over time?
Trait research generally finds personality relatively stable in adulthood, with slow drift over years rather than sudden change. What moves more readily is exposure. Openness is fed by contact with unfamiliar material, and it narrows when your inputs narrow.
