FIRO-B Profile
The Mentor
Takes charge for one person at a time, not for the room
The Mentor is one of six FIRO-B profiles, and it names the ORDER of your three interpersonal needs rather than their strength: Control first, Affection second, Inclusion third.
Influence leads, closeness follows it, and being part of the wider group comes last. In practice that means you would rather have one real conversation with someone about what they should do next than run a meeting or work a room. Mentors take responsibility for individual people. The profile is a ranking, so it says nothing about how directive or how warm you are in absolute terms.
Strengths
- Gives people the direct feedback most colleagues avoid giving
- Invests in one person properly rather than in everyone thinly
- Comfortable holding someone to a standard and staying warm about it
- Does not need the room’s approval to say the unpopular thing
- Follows up — the advice is not the end of your involvement
Growth Edges
- Advice can arrive before it was asked for
- With Inclusion ranked last, the wider group can feel skipped over
- Close working relationships can quietly become unequal ones
- May keep steering someone who is ready to steer themselves
- Being outside the group is comfortable enough that isolation goes unnoticed

Frequently Asked Questions
What does The Mentor mean in FIRO-B?
It means that of your three interpersonal needs, Control ranked first, Affection second, and Inclusion third. It is the order of the three relative to each other, not a claim about how much of any one you have.
Does this mean I am a natural teacher or coach?
It means your instincts point that way — toward influencing one person you are close to — but the profile measures what you reach for, not how skilled you are at it. Whether the mentoring lands depends on things FIRO-B does not measure, starting with whether the other person wanted it.
How is The Mentor different from The Commander?
Both rank Control first, so both move toward influence before anything else. The Mentor puts Affection second — the influence runs through a close relationship. The Commander puts Inclusion second — the influence runs through a group. Same first move, very different second one.
How is The Mentor different from The Confidant?
They are mirror images. Confidants put Affection first and Control second: closeness comes first, and any steering happens inside it. Mentors reverse that — the steering comes first and the closeness supports it.
What should a Mentor watch for?
Two things. Unrequested advice is the classic one — Control leading means guidance arrives fast, and the other person has not always asked. The quieter one is Inclusion ranking last: you can end up with several strong one-to-one relationships and no group at all, which is fine until you need one.
What is FIRO-B?
FIRO-B (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation — Behaviour) was developed by William Schutz. It measures three interpersonal needs — Inclusion, Control, and Affection — each split into an Expressed half and a Wanted half, and is widely used in team development and coaching.
