An aptitude test is not a general knowledge quiz, and it is not an IQ test wearing a different hat. It is a sampling instrument: it takes a small number of problems from each of several kinds of reasoning and uses your performance on the sample to describe how you handle that kind of problem generally. Understanding which kinds it samples, and why they are kept separate, is most of what you need to read your result properly.
Aptitude Is Plural, and That Is the Whole Point
The single most common misreading of an aptitude test is treating the overall band as the result and the section scores as supporting detail. It is the other way round. The overall band exists because people want one number; the section scores exist because reasoning ability is not one thing, and the sections are where the usable information lives.
This is not a philosophical position, it is an observable one. Sit a large group of people down in front of a battery that scores verbal, numerical, logical and abstract reasoning separately, and you will find plenty of people who are strong in two areas and middling in the other two. The pattern of strong-and-weak is different from person to person, and it is stable enough to be worth knowing about. A single combined score averages that pattern away and hands you back the least informative summary of it.
The Aptitude Test reports four section scores alongside the overall band for exactly this reason. Thirty questions is a short battery — deliberately, because a short battery people finish beats a long one they abandon — but it is long enough to separate four areas rather than collapse them into one.
Verbal Reasoning: Working With Meaning
Verbal reasoning items ask you to do things with meaning rather than recall facts about language. Vocabulary items test whether you hold precise senses of words rather than approximate ones. Analogy items test whether you can identify the relationship between one pair of words and then find the same relationship in another pair — which is a structural operation, not a memory one. Sentence logic items test whether you can follow an argument through its connectives and notice when a conclusion does not follow.
What makes verbal reasoning genuinely predictive in a work context is that most professional communication is exactly this operation performed at speed. Reading a brief and noticing the requirement that contradicts another requirement, reading a contract clause and noticing what it does not say, reading a bug report and identifying which sentence contains the actual symptom — all of that is verbal reasoning under time pressure, and people vary in it far more than they think they do.

Numerical Reasoning: Working With Quantity
Numerical reasoning items cover arithmetic, percentages, ratios and number patterns. The word that matters in that list is reasoning: these are not calculation-speed items. The difficulty is almost never in performing the arithmetic, it is in working out which arithmetic the situation calls for.
That distinction is why numerical reasoning surprises people who describe themselves as bad at maths. Being slow at mental arithmetic is a different deficit from being unable to see that a figure quoted as a percentage increase and a figure quoted as a percentage point increase are not comparable. The second is what the section actually probes, and it is the one that shows up in real work — in budget conversations, in pricing decisions, in reading any report that contains a chart.
The reverse also holds. Plenty of people who are fluent with numbers score lower than they expect here, because fluency encourages moving fast, and moving fast on a ratio item that has been worded to invert the obvious reading is how you get it wrong. The section rewards reading the item completely before starting.
Logical and Abstract Reasoning: Working With Structure
Logical reasoning items give you a set of stated conditions and ask what follows from them. The skill is holding several constraints in mind at once and resisting the pull of what is plausible in favour of what is entailed. Almost every wrong answer in a well-built logical reasoning item is not absurd — it is the answer that would be true if you imported one reasonable assumption the item never gave you.
Abstract reasoning strips the language out entirely and gives you sequences and relationships between shapes. Because it carries no vocabulary and no arithmetic, it is the section least affected by education and language background, which is precisely why employers who worry about the fairness of their process lean on it. It is also the section people find hardest to explain their own performance on, because the reasoning happens without words attached to it.

Why Employers Use Aptitude Tests at All
The uncomfortable reason employers reach for aptitude batteries is that the alternatives are worse at the thing hiring most needs: comparing candidates on the same terms. A CV is a self-authored document of uneven honesty. An unstructured interview measures interview performance, which is a real skill but rarely the one being hired for. An aptitude battery at least asks every candidate the same questions and scores them the same way.
That is an argument for including one input, not for letting it decide. A reasoning score says nothing about whether someone finishes what they start, tells the truth when it is expensive, or handles a customer who is already angry. Those are separate dimensions, measured by separate instruments — the Work Ethics & Reliability test for the first two, the Situational Judgement Test for the third — and a hiring process that reads a reasoning score as a general verdict on a person is misusing it.
It works the other way too. If you are the candidate, a battery is the part of the process where preparation actually transfers, because format familiarity is a genuine advantage and it is available to anyone willing to sit one beforehand.
Reading Your Own Result
Start with the four section scores and look for the gap between your highest and lowest. A flat profile and a spiky profile with the same overall band are different results and imply different next moves. A spiky profile tells you where to aim: the low section is where practice buys you the most, and the high section is the one worth mentioning when someone asks what you are good at.
Treat the overall band as a summary for other people rather than information for yourself. It compresses four numbers into one and, like every compression, it throws away the part you were going to use. Anyone reading your result who stops at the band has learned the least useful thing in it.
And treat one sitting as one measurement. Fatigue, interruption and unfamiliarity all move a score, and none of them are traits. If a section score contradicts everything you know about yourself, that is a reason to sit it again on a different day before you believe it.
